Building decision guidance for claims examiners
EvolutionIQ's AI guidance for frontline claims examiners.
- Problem
- Claims examiners face complex cases that can run for years, be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and span hundreds of pages. As Tom, EvolutionIQ’s CEO, put it, there are “way too many complex problems and far too few people to be able to sift through them” (EvolutionIQ).
- User
- Frontline claims examiners at insurers.
- Decision
- As a founding engineer I built the AI guidance platform, which keeps the examiner in the loop. It flags the claims that need attention, shortlists the most actionable ones, and explains why each was flagged and what outcome to aim for. As the company grew, I scaled the platform and the team behind it together: hiring, mentoring engineers into leads, and setting the engineering culture.
- Outcome
- The company grew from a 3-engineer founding team to 200 people and a $730M+ acquisition by CCC Intelligent Solutions (announced December 2024; CCC). EvolutionIQ reports a 20%+ improvement in handling capacity and a 5–10 point reduction in combined ratio (EvolutionIQ).
