About Me

How I got here.

I’m a statistician by training who ended up building AI products. This page covers the path from Vienna, Santiago and Pittsburgh through Google to EvolutionIQ in New York, and what I’m interested in now.

CMU, PhD in Statistics (Early world models: forecasting dynamic systems) → Google, Staff Tech Lead (Ads engineering, personalization, revenue alerting (patent)) → EvolutionIQ, Founding engineer ($730M+ exit) → Today, Director of Engineering & Head of AI

I’m a statistician by training, but my work has always been heavy on machine learning and AI, and I like building things. My PhD in Statistics at Carnegie Mellon was on automated pattern recognition and forecasting for spatio-temporal data such as video and MRI, an early version of what world models do today. For example, I coded my own video kernels to predict pixel-level data with latent state-space representations. I had to do this before PyTorch or TensorFlow were a thing, so it meant lots of Python and CUDA scripts for collecting data, ETL pipelines, and training models. I then spent seven years at Google, building models and prototypes and developing new deep learning architectures and graph algorithms for advertising, forecasting and alerting teams.

March 2020: founding engineer at EvolutionIQ, and the role grew with the company. I started in a forward-deployed role on AI guidance for casualty claims (2020 to 2021). From there I did a more than building 0->1 products: I recruited the ML team 4 to 16 people within a single year, mentored engineers into leads, helped set the engineering culture, led the workers’ compensation products and founded AI Labs, and scaled the platform and the people together. The company grew from a 3-engineer team to 200 people and was acquired by CCC Intelligent Solutions; I was part of the AI due diligence. Now Director of Engineering and Head of AI at EvolutionIQ, part of CCC, with research on causal inference alongside.

Languages. German and English (native proficiency), Spanish and Portuguese (conversational proficiency).

Advising and investing. Early-stage AI startups, mostly on AI, organizational dynamics, and industrial AI for manufacturing.

What I’m interested in

Right now I’m most interested in two things: causal AI that says what happens when you take an action, and the products that put it in front of the people who make the call.

Places

  • Vienna, Austria. Master’s in Mathematics, with distinction.
  • Santiago, Chile. Chilean Spanish is famously fast, and I ended up teaching a graduate time series course in it.
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. PhD in Statistics at Carnegie Mellon.
  • New York City, USA. Home base, first at Google, then EvolutionIQ. Started on the 1 train near Lincoln Center, ended up on the 7 near Gantry Plaza. I’m also a huge fan of the NYC Ferry.
